The YWCA of Hawai'i Island Health Promotion Services (HPS) program consists of two separate programs; Aquatics and Fitness Arts. The HPS programs both share the same motto; we believe a healthy body helps build a healthy mind and person. The YWCA HPS programs provide to its 2,000-plus participants daily opportunities to strengthen themselves and their families through participation in individual and group activities. We strive to create an environment that is nurturing and supportive which embraces and celebrates similarities as well as differences. We encourage regular physical activity to all age groups; promoting wellness of mind, body, and spirit, creating a healthier, happier community.
Our HPS programs are supported by and receive funding from the Hawai'i Island United Way which helps to keep our programs affordable to our members. The HPS program has an established tuition assistance program available to members who qualify, which provides discounts on program fees and YWCA membership.
The YWCA Aquatics facility began programming for our community and members in 1973. For over 33 years the YWCA of Hawai'i Island Aquatics program has offered quality aquatics programming. Our facility is unique in that we have a "salt sanitized", solar heated, 6 lane, 25 yard swimming pool; providing a warm and user-friendly environment for our members and community. The warmer "salt water" is prized by members and staff alike and makes our pool inviting and available to those needing warmer temperatures and preferring gentler sanitizing agents.
YWCA aquatic programming includes year-round Learn to Swim classes, Water Aerobics, Lap Swim, Novice Swim Team, and Family Swim and is open 6 days a week. Our facility is staffed by qualified lifeguards and instructors for all YWCA activities to provide optimum learning and safety. It is also available to our members for private parties and activities, usually a birthday celebration or special occasion. We also partner with up to six schools and organizations within our community in providing instructional and recreational aquatic activities to our youth.
HPS programs collaborate with a variety of clubs and organizations within our community. The American Red Cross for lifeguard and WSI trainings and the local transitional housing program to provide access to our activities through reduced membership and program fees. The YWCA also sponsors meeting space for a cancer support group and H.I.V. testing as well as providing the meeting place for Orchid Isle Ballroom Dance and Contra Dance clubs.
Our pool is sanitized by using a mild level of pure and natural Hawaiian salt. The salt is dissolved in the pool water; the water then goes through an electrical process that results in the salt producing a natural form of chlorine. This natural form of chlorine makes our pool less harsh both on your swim-suites, and on your body.
How salty is the water? Half as salty as your own tears, or about 1/9th as salty as ocean water!
