HILO, HI (September 24
, 2025)—Are you bold enough to walk the walk? YWCA of Hawai‘i Island invites the entire community to lace up — or slip into — their highest heels for the 16th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® march on Saturday, October 25 from 7:30 to 10 a.m.
This unforgettable event calls on men — and people of all genders — to take a literal stand against sexual violence by marching one mile in high heels. It’s a bold, sometimes wobbly, but always powerful way to raise awareness and funds for YWCA’s Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) program, the island-wide crisis and advocacy service for survivors of sexual violence on Hawai‘i Island.
Equal parts fun and fierce, the community-centered event’s attendees can expect decorated heels, but also team spirit, laughter, connection, and a deep commitment to healing, justice, and change. Funds raised directly support SASS’s 24-hour crisis hotline, medical forensic exam program, survivor counseling, and more.
“Sexual violence doesn’t discriminate — and neither do we,” said Lisa Lucia, program director of SASS. “It impacts our keiki, our kupuna, men, women, LGBTQ+ folks, everyone. When someone experiences the trauma of sexual assault, they deserve to be met with care, compassion, and support. That’s why we’re here. And Walk a Mile isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a statement of unity, a declaration that our island community will not stay silent. Every step taken is a step toward a safer, more just world.”
SASS responds to approximately 2,150 crisis and support calls each year and has served the community for over 40 years. All services are free, confidential, and available to anyone on the island no matter their age, gender, or background.
